Our Queenkas are back in town! International girl group (G)I-DLE was here for the Singapore stop of their second worldwide concert tour ‘I am FREE-TY’ which happened at Singapore Indoor Stadium on 29th October 2023.
Made up of Soyeon, Miyeon, Minnie, Yuqi and Shuhua, (G)I-DLE started their second world tour in June this year with two shows in Seoul’s Jamsil Indoor Stadium and included stops in Asia and North America. This tour follows their debut concert tour ‘Just Me ( )I-dle’ which happened around the same time last year. Minnie mentioned that it was precious and special to her that both tours ended here and they are always happy to be back in Singapore.
Starting the concert with their hit songs ‘DUMDi DUMDi’ and ‘LATATA’, the quintet brought a solid setlist of over twenty songs for their Singapore Neverlands ((G)I-DLE’s fans). As this concert included the feature of synced lightsticks, the stunning sea of colours moving to the same beat across the entire Stadium was definitely unforgettable.
(G)I-DLE also took to the stage to perform solo stages; Miyeon with ‘Drive’, Minnie with ‘Dahlia’, Soyeon with ‘Psycho’, Shuhua performing a dance cover of Britney Spears’s ‘Boys’ and lastly Yuqi with ‘Could It Be’. Before Yuqi performed her solo, she also sang short snippets of JJ Lin ‘背對背擁抱’ (Back to Back) and Jay Chou’s ‘稻香’ (Rice Field) to the cheers of fans familiar with those songs.
Speaking to Neverlands in a combination of fluent English and Chinese, similar to last year’s concert, (G)I-DLE had no need for translators. Minnie asked fans for dinner recommendations, getting answers like hotpot, chilli crab and even answers like McDonalds, making her wonder aloud if there was a difference in the menu from Korea’s.
Shuhua debuted her new shorter haircut at this concert, mentioning that last year when she dyed her hair for their ‘Nxde’ promotions, Singapore Neverlands were also the first to see her new hair. Shuhua also thanked everyone as with their support, (G)I-DLE has managed to return and perform at a bigger venue as compared to last year.
(G)I-DLE treated fans to a three-song encore, namely ‘i’M THE Trend, ‘I DO’ and ‘Lion’.
‘I DO’, (G)I-DLE’s first original English single, drew one of the loudest cheers when Yuqi introduced it. The insanely viral song even has two music videos, one with (G)I-DLE members and another version, ‘I DO: A Love Story in Bangkok’ featuring popular Thailand actors, Tu Tontawan and Dew Jirawat of the F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers fame.
Before ending the concert, the girls promised Singapore Neverlands that they will return to our sunny island soon, peppering their final ments with ‘take care’ and ‘see you next year’!
From flashy stages, powerful vocals to showy dance sequences, (G)I-DLE definitely brought the house down, keeping Singapore Neverlands dancing on their feet for more than two and half hours. We look forward to (G)I-DLE’s return to Singapore next year!
