Capitol Theatre came alive last Friday evening with Korean rapper Lee Youngji taking over the venue for her first solo concert, LEE YOUNGJI 1st ASIA TOUR ‘THE MAIN CHARACTER’ – SINGAPORE.
Starting with a VCR showing footage of Lee Youngji from her High School Rapper 3 stint, followed by her bursting onto stage with ‘Cypher’ and ‘Go High’.
Youngji quipped, “Since you came all the way here, you should know my songs! What’s my name?” To which the crowd all shouted “Lee Youngji!” in unison, leading in to the next song, ‘I’m Lee Youngji’.

Youngji was amazed by Singapore’s energy and reactions despite it being her first time here in Singapore, and she requested for everyone to keep up with the vibe! To reward her fans, she went down to the crowd multiple times to engage closely with them.
Even Youngji’s dancers (shoutout to Nohwon, Injeong, Eunhye and Saerim of Amazon crew!) also had their share of fanfare as the crowd cheered them on enthusiastically during their dance stages. Something noteworthy is that they are not just any dancers, they are the same dancers that were with Youngji for Show Me The Money 11–where she was crowned the winner.

A special guest – an adorable Rilakkuma mascot with additional eyebrows and whiskers – made its appearance during ‘Freesia’, ‘replacing’ rapper Layone who featured on this track.

Youngji did not miss out on the paper ring surprise prepared by fans as the first fan project for the night during ‘Day & Night’, where she put on the ring and cheekily accepted her Singapore fans’ proposal. Youngji also joked that this was the ‘Day & Night’ stage that she had been the quietest so far, as her fans were all enthusiastically singing loudly instead!
One valuable life lesson to bring home is that “feelings are gone, but the money is there”: two of her songs, ‘Freesia’ and ‘Anemone’, featured a rapper that she used to harbour feelings for but was rejected. Instead of being sad, she changed her mindset to make songs based on her feelings and make some money out of it instead. We stan an entrepreneur and honest queen!
Following a VCR of her interview from Show Me The Money 11, Youngji performed some of her mission stages from SMTM 11. The rapper also got the crowd to rap along to ‘Blue Check Remix’.

Another memorable quote from the night is, “Life is a competition, you know”, as she got the audience in Level 1 to pit their cheers against those on Level 2, but the most exciting part was choosing a lucky fan through rock paper scissors to be rapper pH-1 for ‘Not Sorry’–and boy, was the selected fan talented indeed in rapping pH’s parts.
Fans were also treated to ‘Witch’ from SMTM 11, featuring the same dancers as the original stage!

Fans raised their banners during the next fan project during ‘Dejavu’, where Youngji got everyone to turn on their phone’s torches for the performance. Before going backstage for a quick wardrobe change, the cheeky rapper also hinted to fans on when to shout for an encore.
Youngji returned to the stage with a slew of hits, including ‘Hello is this bad bitch number?’, ‘DNA remix’, crowd-favourite ‘Fighting’, as well as ‘Smoke’–the track currently trending on SNS at the moment, and it was surreal to see her perform that in person.

The rapper also had a special surprise up her sleeves, as she changed into an ‘I ❤️ SG’ shirt to perform a song that she practised just for the Singapore stop–JJ Lin’s “Twilight” (不为谁而作的歌) before ending her first Singapore show in the most memorable manner.
A special shoutout to her in engaging the audience with her hilarious yet relatable English banter (which she said she picked up through TikTok!) as much as she could. Besides being known as an entertainer with her frequent variety appearances, the all-rounded Lee Youngji still proved her prowess with her incredible rapping skills (not forgetting her vocals and dance skills too!) and her fire stage presence.
