Have you tried the Fire Noodles Challenge (or Korean Spicy Noodles) that has been taking the internet by storm earlier on this year? If you can’t handle the spiciness (like me) or just want to try something new, here are some variations of the trending Fire Noodles (buldak bokkeum myeon/불닭볶음면) by Koreans:

* I’ll be referring to the noodles as Fire Noodles in this article for convenience, and in 1 Fire Noodles packet, there is a sauce packet and a seaweed flakes packet included inside.

1. Cheese Tteok Fire Noodles (치즈떡불닭볶음면)

Ingredients: 1 packet of Fire Noodles (Korean Spicy Noodles), tteok (rice cakes), cheese

  1. Boil water and cook the noodles.
  2. Boil rice cakes.
  3. Transfer the noodles to a saucepan and leave around 10-12 spoonfuls of water; pour away the rest of the water.
  4. Pour the sauce packet found in the Fire Noodle packaging.
  5. Mix the sauce with the noodles and slightly stir-fry the noodles over low heat.
  6. Rinse the boiled rice cakes under cold water.
  7. Add the rice cakes to the saucepan.
  8. Mix the rice cakes well with the sauce and continue to cook over low heat for around 20 seconds.
  9. After transferring the noodles and rice cakes onto a plate, add cheese on top.
  10. For the cheese to melt properly, microwave the plate for around 1:30 mins. Lastly, add the packet of seaweed flakes and sesame which is also found in the Fire Noodle packaging and enjoy!

Ingredients (for 2-4 servings): 3 packets of Fire Noodle (Korean Spicy Noodles), 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, 1 onion, ham, 500ml of milk (or 3 small cartons of milk), 3 slices of cheese, cooking oil

  1. Chop up the vegetables and ham to smaller pieces.
  2. Add oil into the saucepan and then add and stir-fry the chopped garlic. After the garlic fragrance has come out, add garlic in and stir-fry, and lastly add ham. If you have additional ingredients for the noodles, add them here as well.
  3. Add milk into the saucepan, followed by the sauce packet from the Fire Noodle packaging. Adjust the amount of sauce to add according to the preferred level of spiciness.
  4. While boiling the carbonara ‘sauce’, boil the noodles in another pot, and pour away the water after the noodles has boiled.
  5. Add the noodles to the sauce mixture in the saucepan, followed by cheese. Turn off the fire a short while after adding cheese, and transfer the noodles to a plate.
  6. Add the seaweed flakes packet on top of the noodles and enjoy!

Steps: (I’ll start from step 4 with reference to the image above)

4. Season the rice: add 2 spoonfuls of sesame oil, 1 spoonful of sesame, and seaweed. (Tip: if the seaweed isn’t seasoned, you can add 1/3 spoonful of salt)
5. Add tuna to the rice and mix them together into little clumps.
6. Spread out/flatten a clump of rice in your hand and add some noodles on it.
7. Use both hands to mould the rice into a ball shape.
