This spring, two of Korea’s biggest stars, IU (When Life Gives You Tangerines, My Mister) and Byeon Wooseok (Lovely Runner, Strong Girl Nam-soon), headline the romantic comedy series “Perfect Crown”, now streaming on Disney+. Set in 21st-century Korea, a constitutional monarchy where tradition meets modernity, the series explores love, ambition, and power with style and flair.
Seong Huiju, played by IU, is a brilliant chaebol heiress and CEO who seems to have it all. Yet as a commoner by birth, she is denied the respect she deserves and it frustrates her to no end. Huiju is smart, driven, and unafraid to bend the rules, using manipulation or bursts of temper to get what she wants while knowing when to retreat. Her dynamic pursuit of Grand Prince I-AN is a also fresh take on the usual “fake marriage” trope.
After the first two episodes, it’s hard not to draw comparisons to one of IU’s most iconic roles, Jang Manwol from “Hotel Del Luna”. Both Huiju and Manwol are portrayed as wealthy and successful women with a penchant for flamboyant (and expensive) fashion, paired with similarly arrogant, blunt, and short-tempered personalities. While the resemblance is intriguing, it also risks feeling a little too familiar at times.
Byeon Wooseok portrays Grand Prince I-AN, a royal constrained by duty and palace politics. Though he appears composed and tightly controls his expressions, we get glimpses of curiosity and warmth toward Huiju. His fans are in for a treat—episode two had us letting out a loud yelp at one particular scene!
Supporting roles add both tension and comic relief. Noh Sanghyun plays Min Jeongwoo, I-AN’s confidant and Huiju’s old school friend, whom we suspect might have had harbored a crush on our female lead in the past. Gong Seungyeon as Yun Irang is easy to dislike, especially when she pits herself against Byeon Wooseok’s character. She is protective of her son, which isn’t wrong, but there are hints on how far she is willing to do so. We can only nervously await the story to unfold as Irang navigates palace politics and public sentiment.
Loyal aides Choi Hyun, played by Yoo Subin, and Huiju’s chief secretary Do Hyejeong, played by Lee Yeon, lighten the mood with playful banter while navigating palace and corporate intrigues. We particularly enjoy both of them being smart with their respective bosses, especially when HyeJeong, while on a phone call with Huiju, could predict all of Huiju’s moves even while not being able to see her.
Visually, the series is a feast. Stunning sets, elaborate costumes, and a gorgeous score bring grandeur to events like the young king’s birthday celebrations. The pacing in the first two episodes feel rather quick in our opinion, but the chemistry between IU and Byeon Wooseok is magnetic, having us eagerly anticipating every scene they share.
We can’t help but compare “Perfect Crown” to the wildly popular 2006 series “Princess Hours”, which also explored a commoner marrying into royalty. Unlike the female lead there, Huiju is strong, cunning, and unafraid to bend or break the rules to get what she wants. Her boldness and determination make the series feel fresh, and paired with Grand Prince I-AN’s quiet charm, their dynamic is endlessly engaging. While the success of “Princess Hours” catapulted its actors to crazy fame, our leads in this series are already at the top of their popularity. The question now is whether “Perfect Crown” will become just as beloved.
We do expect some similarities between the two series, such as the commoner learning to navigate palace rules. However, Huiju is no passive participant in this world. With her sharp instincts and a powerful ally like Jeongwoo at her side, she challenges the system rather than simply adapting to it. This raises intriguing questions: will having Huiju as his wife give Grand Prince I-AN the freedom to pursue his true desires, or will her boldness create new complications as palace expectations collide with their ambitions? Her presence could prove to be either a powerful advantage or a complicated challenge.
Meanwhile, the young king is utterly adorable and clearly relies on his uncle I-AN for guidance, a dynamic that Irang openly despises. Will this soft spot for his nephew become Grand Prince I-AN’s vulnerability, or could he cleverly use it to pursue his own goals? It is still early, but the genuine affection between uncle and nephew shines through in the first two episodes, and we are hopeful that their close relationship will continue to remain strong.
