Just when you thought that K-Entertainment couldn’t get more erratic, there’s a whole new way to be entertained by people other than your favourite K-pop stars. They are called BJs (short for Broadcast Jockeys) and most of them host their own “shows” on this platform called “AfreecaTV”. Specifically, today I will be introducing the idea of Mokbang to you guys!

Mokbang is short for 먹는방송 which literally translates into, “eating broadcast”. And as the name itself suggests, the BJs, just eat in front of camera. It’s not just the simple act of eating. These BJs eat a massive amount of food. Usually they eat food of portions meant for 6 to 7 people or sometimes even portions for 10 people all by themselves.

You might not believe it but these people can actually make a living out of taking videos of them eating! Talk about having that as a job! When they hold their live shows on Afreeca TV, sometimes the food that they are going to eat is sent in by a fan which also means they can save on the food bill! Considering how much they eat, their food bills might just amount to a few grand monthly! When the viewers of the live show are pleased with the live show, they can send “balloons” to the BJs while the live chat is going on. These “balloons” act as the virtual currency and are usually worth about 10 cents (SGD). The BJs can then cash these “balloons” out as real money.

Some of the viewers have expressed that they feel satisfied seeing someone eat such a large amount of food, an amount that they will never be able to eat. There are also viewers who live alone and they have said that they like to watch these people eat because it feels like they’re eating with them and they don’t feel as lonely.

Today, I’m going to introduce to you guys two of my favourite Mokbang show hosts and maybe after you see them here, you’ll start drooling as well!

The first person I’m going to introduce to you guys is Banzz (밴쯔). He is my favourite Mokbang expert and he always starts his videos with his bright personality. Without further delays, here’s my favourite Mokbang done by Banzz (밴쯔)

Another one of my favourites is TV Diva (티비 디바). With model-like features, it’s a wonder how she manages to keep her physique even after eating so much. Maybe there’s some special magic to it like how ramyun soup powder has to almost any dish you add it into. On a serious note, some Mokbang hosts have admitted to working out 10 to 12 hours a day just to keep themselves the size they are at now. With great enjoyment also comes great sacrifice.

Now, enough of the talk. Here’s one of my favourite Mokbangs done by TV Diva. Also mainly because it’s so damn satisfying to watch her eat the crustaceans that I’ll never be able to eat without feeling discomfort. (I have a bad seafood allergy).

I’m introducing a male and female to you guys in hopes to provide more variety and hopefully you can delve into this erratic yet wonderful world of Mokbangs! Also, these 2 Mokbang hosts have a considerable following on YouTube and they are actively operating their YouTube channel while majority of the Mokbang hosts especially the more minor ones only operate on AfreecaTV like I mentioned earlier.

Of course, there are other Mokbang hosts that you can explore such as hot models and hunks pigging their hearts out. Making it both a visual and psychological feast.

Now you have earned bragging rights to tell your friends that you again learned something new about Korean culture! I think I feel a pool of drool pooling in front of my face and maybe it’s time for me to grab something to eat.
