5 Comedians Who Might As Well Be Singers

Our favourite memories of gag performers probably come to us in the form of short bursts of slapstick comedy in 2 Days 1 Night or Running Man. Or for the true gag fanatics, perhaps you’re an ardent fan of gag shows such as ‘Gag Concert’, ‘Laugh Hunters’ and ‘SNL Korea’.

Gag shows are shows that feature short skits performed one after another. These skits often use an exaggerated portrayal of daily life situations as the basis of humour and for an added touch, other elements such as puns, music, trends or even politics are used.

Alike idol trainees, gag performer aspirants go through arduous training and auditions in order to become part of gag shows in major broadcasting stations. Some of them possess extraordinary talents such as acrobatic abilities. In this article, let’s take a look at 5 gag performers who happen to also be extremely talented at singing.

1. Shin Bora (신보라)

Shin Bora has gained a significant amount of attention for being the “pretty comedian” amongst her batch. But everyone inevitably fell deeply in love with her after watching her sing at one of the skits. She moved on to release her debut song and took a short break from performing comedy, and she has since released multiple songs!

2. Lee Dongyun (이동윤)

Comedian Lee Dongyun has appeared in multiple musical skits on Gag Concert and is known for his deep and husky voice, fit for belting out those break up ballads. That’s exactly what he did for his appearance on ‘Perfect Singer’, wowing the crowd and even veteran singer Park Wangyu with his rendition of ‘Love, That Jerk’. He is now an active comedian and musical performer.

3. Kim Taewon 김태원

Most people are shocked at the kind of clean and clear voice he has, contrary to his big and burly appearance. His vocals are truly fit for any type of song but I can best imagine him to be a winning contestant on Immortal Song. Looking forward to his activities as a vocalist!

4. An Somi 안소미

Known for her dance skills and pretty looks, being a comedian didn’t stop Somi from pursuing a career as a trot singer. Her experience in gag has definitely helped her reach those high notes and all those twists and turns. With her voice, she’s definitely someone you want to invite to parties. Check out her impressive live performance on ‘Juke Bus’!

5. Kim Young Chul (김영철)

When talking about comedians turned singers, we just can’t leave him out. Most commonly known for his catchphrase, “I’m a comedian, not a Canadian~”, his songs are a mix of old school techno beats with trot singing and a catchy chorus. His songs are no chart toppers but they’ve proven to be nationwide hits, further proving his status as one of the nation’s top comedian!
