South Korea’s vocal queen Taeyeon has recently released her 4th mini album, “What Do I Call You”, which has ranked first on major music charts in Korea, and also topped the iTunes Top Album Chart in more than 15 countries. “What Do I Call You” has also achieved the remarkable feat of having the highest first week album sales for a Korean female solo artiste in 2020 on the Hanteo charts, as well as being the best-selling album by a Korean female soloist in 2020.
“What Do I Call You” consists of a total of 6 songs of various genres, including “To The Moon” in which it was the first time where Taeyeon participated in both the lyrics writing and composition for a track. The concept images have also garnered a lot of attention with the diverse styles, where Taeyeon was put into two moods – before and after a breakup, and with the overall concept filled with girly vintage vibes.
1) What Do I Call You
The title song “What Do I Call You” is an R&B pop song characterized by a minimalist and rhythmic melody created by individual instruments. The lyrics is about feeling apathetic and indifferent to an ex who is still lingering around after a breakup.
The lyrics for “Playlist” is about giving a playlist full of memories and affection to a loved one, and the song features an acoustic guitar, piano and retro organ sounds accompanied with Taeyeon’s soft and relaxed voice.
3) To the moon
Taeyeon participated in both the composing and lyrics writing for “To the moon”, which is actually a tribute to her dog, Zero. During her album countdown VLIVE, Taeyeon described how this song is meaningful to her as it encompasses her daily life, and she wanted to include her best friend and pet, Zero as well.
“Flapping ears and sulky mouth”– Taeyeon’s favourite lyrics from “To the moon”
4) 들불 (Wildfire)
“Wildfire” is a track with bright energy and has guitar synths with Taeyeon’s endless vocals on top of a speedy accompaniment, with the lyrics comparing the feelings of love that spread passionately to that of flames in a field.
“Galaxy” is a minimal R&B ballad with calm guitar and warm piano melody, plus Taeyeon’s deep emotions. The lyrics talk about a miraculous moment when everything changes after meeting a person, like the universe that started with a single ray of light in the darkness.
“Happy”, a R&B pop song that reinterprets old school doo-wop and R&B into a modern sound – with lyrics about the warmth & happiness found in time spent with loved ones, was previously released as a single last May as a special gift for fans.
