Following shortly behind group mates Moonbyul’s and Hwasa’s footsteps, MAMAMOO member Solar returned to Singapore for her latest solo concert, SOLAR 2ND CONCERT [COLOURS] TOUR IN SINGAPORE, held at the Capitol Theatre on 27th July.
Solar opened the concert with ‘Colors’, ‘RAW’ and ‘Spit it out’ to a crowd of excited YONGSOONs who illuminated the venue with their MooBongs. Greeting fans at the venue, Solar revealed that this is her second concert after the first one held in 2018, and this also marked her first overseas tour.
“The [COLOURS] Tour has been running hard since June, and the energy of YONGSOONs here is incredible!”
Solar also mentioned that the Singapore weather was very hot, to which the fans replied that it was because of her, and in response, she said that it was because of her fans instead.
Starting off with a short acoustic version of ‘Mellow’, Solar dived into the honey jar with her fans – with a medley of ‘honey’-titled songs: ‘Honey Honey’, ‘HONEY BEE’ and ‘HONEY’. She joked, “I never knew I had so many honey-related songs!”
Besides being an expert on hyping up her fans, Solar also showcased her vocal prowess with a series of ballads, such as ‘Where The Wind Rises’, ‘Only Longing Grows’ and ‘Love Has Gone’, akin to a mini Solar Gamsung throwback.
YONGSOONs also had a good laugh during the VCR segment, where Solar dressed the part and did covers of Beyoncé’s ‘Crazy In Love’, Christina Aguilera’s ‘Candyman’ and Sia’s ‘Chandelier’.
Switching out of her opening white outfit to a red sequinned dress, Solar returned to stage for ‘Big Booty’ – a song that she wrote, followed by jazzy ‘Blues’ where her mic drop moment was met with loud cheers from the fans. Donning a robe, Solar performed songs from her musical “Mata Hari”, in her musical persona.
Solar asked if her fans were having a hard time, and proceeded to dedicate the next song, ‘Easy Peasy’ – which she also wrote – to them. It was nice to see the fans vibe along to the light-hearted tune, and singing along to ‘easy peasy lemon squeezy’ at the end.
Besides songs from her solo albums, Solar also chose tracks from MAMAMOO’s albums, such as ‘Star Wind Flower Sun’ and ‘HELLO’. After getting fans to sing along to ‘But I’, Solar was taken by surprise by the fan video project that was suddenly flashed on the screen, describing Solar in various colours. Once the VCR ended, fans held up the project slogans, all while chanting “Kim Yongsun”. Solar was surprised once more when a cake was carted out on stage before the photo taking session. As National Day was coming up, she also took the opportunity to wish Singapore happy birthday with the cake.
While waiting for Solar’s return for an encore, fans sang along to MAMAMOO’s ‘I love too’, with the lyrics displayed on the screen. Although the rap part was a bit chaotic (understandably, as Korean is not our first language), the effort put in by Singapore YONGSOONs was definitely applaudable.
Solar then returned for her encore with ‘It’s been a long time’, and surprised fans by going down to the audience for ‘Bohémienne’, from her latest musical “Notre Dame De Paris”. The atmosphere instantly changed to that of a club scene with ‘Paradise’, where the venue transformed into a huge dance party and got everyone jumping along with Solar. The crowd was so high that they requested for a repeat of the song, to which Solar gamely agreed to.
It was time for her standard song request segment as Solar whipped up her song book to refer to lyrics. Starting out with ‘Please Listen to This in the Evening’ (a song that was released on her YouTube channel, Solarsido, on her birthday, was meant to give comfort to people) and ‘A Song From the Past’. Solar continued with covers of Hozier’s ‘Take Me to Church’ and Sam Smith’s ‘Unholy’, which was met with loud cheers from the fans. Solar closed the segment with ‘IMAGE (5:52 am)’ and a song she really wanted to sing – ‘Part of Your World’ from “The Little Mermaid”.
What caught everyone by surprise was Solar’s surprise for the Singapore stop: her cover of Kit Chan’s ‘Home’, which were met with loud gasps once she belted out the first few words of the song. Her rendition was so moving and breathtaking, that fans requested for her to sing it once more. Solar asked for another photo taking session with the fans, but this time she requested everyone to change their MooBongs’ colour to red, to match Singapore’s colour.
Solar ended her [COLOURS] concert in Singapore with ‘I Will Give You All My Love’ and another performance of ‘Colors’.
“Until we meet again in Singapore, please wait for me!” Throughout the concert, Solar had been peppering her ments with Singlish phrases that she frequently used during her previous shows here, such as ‘shiok shiok’ and ‘swee’, even picking up ‘chio bu’ (pretty lady) this time round. With her heartwarming rendition of ‘Home’, at this point, Solar should be presented with the Singapore passport.
