From Beats To Blocks: SHAUN’s “Pixels” Blends J-Pop Emotion And Minecraft Aesthetic

Korean singer-songwriter and producer SHAUN, who has surpassed 1.8 billion global streams and currently draws 2.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, is set to release his new single “Pixels” on May 22 at 6 PM (KST). Serving as the pre-release track for his upcoming summer EP, “Pixels” marks the beginning of a bold new musical chapter for the artist.

SHAUN first gained widespread recognition with his debut EP [TAKE] in 2018, earning a No.1 spot on every major Korean chart with the track “Way Back Home”, which has since reached over 100 million views on YouTube. With subsequent releases like “An-nyeong”, “36.5”, and the “Omnibus” series, SHAUN has built an unparalleled career, accumulating 1.8 billion streams and collaborating with international artists such as Yuna and Jeff Satur, showcasing both mass appeal and global sensibility.

His latest single “Pixels” deviates from his signature electronic-pop sound and dives into a band-driven style influenced by the emotional landscape of J-Pop. A longtime fan of Japanese animation and music culture, SHAUN has actively incorporated these inspirations into the composition and mood of the track.

Pixels is also inspired by the game Minecraft—a theme that manifests not only in the title (“Dots, Lines, and Surfaces” in Korean), but also through lyrics like “A world full of cubes where nothing is impossible” and “The endless dots, lines, and surfaces stretching before my eyes.” The lyric video, released alongside the single, captures the mood of the song with a stylish, game-inspired visual direction that echoes a contemporary, internet-savvy aesthetic. The single offers a glimpse into the sonic direction of SHAUN’s upcoming EP, promising more narrative-driven, emotionally immersive compositions and a renewed artistic identity.

SHAUN also debuted the track live at the Green Camp Festival on May 18, sharing this new beginning directly with his fans. Through a combination of live performance and visual storytelling, he continues to expand beyond audio releases to create multi-dimensional experiences.

Pixels” is especially significant as it is the first official release since SHAUN’s departure from his former management and transition into independent status. Having once played synth and written songs as a member of the indie band The Koxx, and with extensive experience performing at rock festivals across Korea, SHAUN now fully embraces his identity as a one-man creator—writing, producing, and performing his own work.

More than a standalone release, “Pixels” signifies the start of SHAUN’s renewed artistic chapter—one that re-establishes him as a consistently resonant and reliable voice. His forthcoming summer EP is expected to bring this transformation into full view. With music now woven into a larger narrative arc, SHAUN’s evolution is poised to become one of the most compelling musical stories to follow this summer.
