[INTERVIEW] Yim Siwan Reveals His First Impression On Seorina’s Male Bodyguard Transformation in “Love in Disguise”

What happens when a detective disguises herself as a man to investigate a murder suspect? “Love in Disguise” brings Yim Siwan and Seorina together in a romantic comedy where mystery, thrills, and suspense are seamlessly woven into the story. Ahead of its October 19 premiere exclusively on Prime Video, the two lead actors share more on what made their series special, Jae-hee’s transformation into a male bodyguard, and the chemistry viewers can look forward to!

Q: What made “Love in Disguise” stand out to you, and what was the biggest reason you wanted to be part of this project?
Yim Siwan: When I first received the script for “Love in Disguise“, it felt familiar, and yet, there was something distinctive about it. It felt like something I’d seen somewhere before, but when I looked more closely at each aspect of it, I realized it was actually filled with things I had never seen anywhere before. The script kept revealing these distinctive qualities within that sense of familiarity, so I thought I’d really enjoy working on this project and thought audiences would enjoy watching it as well.
Seorina: My reasons are quite similar to what Siwan just mentioned. While it may seem like a romantic comedy, I felt that the way elements of mystery, thrills, and suspense are seamlessly woven into the story gives it a unique appeal that sets it apart from other romantic comedies. Most importantly, I was fascinated by how Yoon Yi-jun, Kang Jae-hee, and the other characters each have their own individual stories that they bring to the larger narrative.

Q: One of the biggest highlights of the series is Jae-hee’s transformation into a male bodyguard. What were your first impressions when you saw her final look?
Yim Siwan: The first time I saw her after she had cut her hair was at our table read. She’d been asked to prepare for the role, but I didn’t expect her to show up looking exactly like a bodyguard with short hair. But there she was, looking exactly the part. That was when I became convinced that the series would be fun to watch just from seeing this different side of Jae-hee.
Q: Kang Jae-hee is a former special forces soldier, a detective, and an undercover bodyguard, which required both physical strength and action scenes. How did you prepare for this role? Did you go through any special action or physical training?
Seorina: Jae-hee had so many action scenes that you could almost call it an action series just for her. So starting in pre-production, I spent a lot of time training at a stunt school, coordinating and rehearsing with the stunt team and continuously working on my stamina. I knew I wouldn’t have much time to work out once filming started, but Jae-hee had to maintain that sense of strength throughout, and I didn’t want to lose that, so I tried my best to prepare as much as I could. Beyond the action scenes, I also spent a lot of time studying and practicing every aspect of how she carried herself, including the way she walked and sat.
Q: If you could reveal just one reason why audiences should look forward to your chemistry in this series, what would it be?
Yim Siwan: They start out hating each other so much, almost to the point of despising each other. But if all they ever did was hate each other, you wouldn’t have much of a romance in this romantic comedy. So there will obviously be a certain turning point along the way, and I think it’ll be fun for viewers to keep an eye out for what that turning point might be. There are also these moments when they find themselves somehow drawn to each other, so I think you’ll have even more fun watching the series if you pay attention to those moments.
Q: Do you have a message for fans around the world who are looking forward to watching “Love in Disguise“?
Yim Siwan: We had so many moments on set where we were trying hard not to laugh, and there were quite a few takes we had to redo because we couldn’t stop laughing. The atmosphere on set was that enjoyable, and we filmed a lot of funny scenes in that atmosphere and really tried to make the most of those moments. I hope all of you enjoy watching the series as much as we enjoyed making it, or hopefully even more. “Love in Disguise” will be coming your way soon, so I hope you look forward to it and tune in when it premieres.
Seorina: I hope you enjoy watching how a woman who has to hide her identity and gender approaches a man who doesn’t trust people, and how the two eventually grow closer. I also hope you enjoy watching for when and how the romantic comedy charm of the story begins to emerge. So please look forward to the series and give it lots of love.
