Taiwan – A breakthrough in Taiwan’s Mandopop scene, rising rap-star Miya Ro (米亞若)‘s latest single “I’M ILL (feat. ZHEEN)” was a groundbreaking release recently. Being one of the very few female rappers in the Taiwan Mandopop scene, Miya Ro was formerly in a Taiwanese girl group ‘No Limit (無限甜心)’. A singer, rapper and composer, that’s not all. Miya Ro came from the background of a professional dance instructor for many singers and groups. Read our previous interview back in 2015 when the talented group ‘No Limit’ released their 2nd EP. We have witnessed the growth of Miya Ro as a member of a girl group until today, as a solo artiste with strong personality and charisma. Read on to find out more about how the catchy and self-expressive track came about.
Q. Why did you choose to release your solo track on your birthday?
Miya Ro: “I’M ILL (feat. ZHEEN)” was released on 27th February 2018 which was my birthday as well. It wasn’t coincidental but intentional. Personally, this signifies a brand new start for me from scratch.
Q. Where did the inspiration for “I’M ILL (feat. ZHEEN)” come from?
Miya Ro: This track is my own composition inspired by myself. I wanted to properly introduce who I am as a solo artiste – my capabilities and strengths. The term “I’M ILL” in the hip-hop culture is similar to a self-proclamation that one is the best of the best, the most capable and powerful. This is the image that I want to portray to the world.
Q. Who is ZHEEN?
Miya Ro: ZHEEN is a 19 year-old trainee, also my junior under the same management (No Limit Entertainment). Apart from being well-versed in song composition and skilled in rap, ZHEEN is a very well-mannered and hardworking boy. Please look forward to his upcoming works in future.
Q. What are your upcoming plans after the release?
Miya Ro: I will be actively involved in TV programs and tours in schools and academies to promote my new solo track!
Q. What have you been busy with since the 2nd EP release with the girl group ‘No Limit’ in 2015?
Miya Ro: Well, I’ve been busy composing songs all these while. Apart from my own compositions, I’ve also produced songs for other singers and TV programs.
Q. Describe the year 2017 in one word.
Miya Ro: “Adversity“. Last year was rather distressing and things weren’t progressing smoothly as planned. Many thoughts and feelings were suppressed and left unsaid. That being said, I told myself to stay silent, lay low and focus on producing my own music. Keeping quiet doesn’t mean I’m backing out nor weak, it’s my belief of putting in hard work continuously and unconditionally. These hard work and efforts accumulated over these times will be recognized and seen some day.
Q. Tell us your hopes for 2018 in two words.
Miya Ro: “Awakened” After all these years of efforts and hard work, I’ve waited for the right time to share what I’ve been working on. I have so much to show you now, the Miya Ro as a solo artiste – stronger and more power than before.
Q. What kind of breakthrough are you anticipating for this year?
Miya Ro: I’ve always sought to improve my music and looking forward to work with other artistes in the the music scene. Speaking of breakthroughs, I hope to be involved in dramas in some ways. As I’ve previously worked on the music production for dramas, it will be great to challenge the untouched territory of acting.
Q. Which artiste do you look up to? Can you recommend a song by them?
Miya Ro: Actually.. I’m an ARMY, a huge fan of Korean boy band ‘BTS’. I really admire their music and choreography. After watching a couple of their concerts and awards show in person, I’m completely mesmerized and moved by their sincerity and hard work. I will recommend “Mic Drop” by BTS as this song is similar to “I’M ILL” in certain ways. Both songs are trying to expresses and prove ourselves while haters continue to talk to themselves.
“I’M ILL” is an upbeat and catchy track exploding with confidence dissing the haters. Watch “I’M ILL (feat. ZHEEN)” music video below!
