[Techie Tuesday] Solving your mobile connection woes in Korea with the EG SIM!

17 February 2015, Singapore – Have you ever found yourself to be in a pickle when overseas, and need a local number for whatever reasons? Desperately searching for that wifi connection to get in contact with your best friend (Google) for some help? Of course these services are definitely available in the countries that you are planning to head to, but the process of getting it may be the difficult part!

Our team makes annual trips to the land of Kimchi with our own budget. How does the team survive? We started knowing nothing about renting portable wifi devices or buying pre-paid SIM cards (It has been maybe 5-6 years since we all made our first trip and back then, all these services were not really that prevalent); so we had to rely on free wifi spots to leech on. These services were often only offered at the airport, and if you are unlucky to be served by a Korean who knows minimal English, things could get messy.

So why go through all the pain when you can now get your pre-paid SIM by EG SIM, right from the Changi Recommends booths in Changi International Airport right before you take off? Everything is in English and the staffs are more than welcome to answer any queries (not that Koreans are not equally welcoming). So what exactly is offered by the EG SIM?

For SGD35 (30 days usage) you can get:

  • 30 minutes talk-time (local and International)
  • 1GB of high speed data
  • Available SIM Sizes: Normal, Micro and Nano*
  • *Extra SGD10 for Nano SIM cards.

Although the EG SIM sold in Singapore is the same as what you will get in Korea, I personally encourage you to grab yours in Singapore. The waiting time and customer service may not be great as you are subjected to possible queues, booth operating hours (if your flight arrives too late), stock availability; and you have to go through the complications of making tradeoffs between wanting more talk-time or more data.

For something more expensive, I paid for:

  • 30 minutes talk-time (Local and International)
  • 1GB data
  • Available SIM Sizes: Normal, Micro and Nano.

Plus, I had issues making the purchase online so I had to settle with an offline purchase, meaning I had to make my way to the physical shop in Myeongdong. It was difficult to navigate and I really had to rely on Google Maps.

TIP: Register to activate your EG SIM card prior your flight to Korea.

Why? EG Mobile requires the user to submit a clear passport photo on m.egsimcard.co.kr and the approval process takes about 130 minutes. That way, you can stay in touch with your friends and love ones the moment you land.

1. For registrations that is submitted after Korea’s business hours2, it will be processed on the following day, 0900hrs.

2. Korea business hours:
Mondays to Fridays 0900 – 2200
Weekends and Holidays 0900 – 1800
