[REVIEW] SUGA Shows Raw Insights to Curating his Album in Documentary ‘Road to D-DAY’

SUGA’s, aka Min Yoongi, new album D-DAY is out, along comes a documentary SUGA: Road to D-DAY to commemorate the time spent in curating the album with some footage dating back to 2020.

Upon watching, it was evident that it’ll be a reflective documentary. It focused on his quest to re-solve his worries of curating D-DAY; he recounted his fear of having nothing to say with his new music and felt that he had many stories to tell earlier on in his career, but wondered if he lost them due to achieving many great things.

This led Yoongi to go on trips from LA to Japan to aid in creating what the world knows now, D-DAY. Through his adventures, he met with friends Steve Aoki, Halsey, Ruichi Sakamoto and Anderson Paak, where armys would keel over multiple cute moments! Featured artists also shared their thoughts of working with Yoongi, all complimenting how forward thinking he was when creating music.

Through the documentary, we see Yoongi battling multiple identity crisis. As BTS gained popularity in the West, they started shouldering responsibilities of being representatives of the minorities – and that gave them immense pressure. He also felt the need to prove himself with his alter ego, Agust D, for the public to see him as a ‘good’ producer despite having written many amazing songs for both BTS and renowned singers in the industry. This came from many not recognising him in his previous new song, Daechwita

Yoongi’s persistence in the face of adversity is one of the things I look up to as an army; in true Yoongi’s style, this documentary does not shy away from hard topics. He openly talked about mental health and trauma, which were main inspirations to the song Amygdala – an extremely raw song where he recounted his own personal traumas.

Armys can expect to see Yoongi’s repertoire of singing and rapping during the live performances from both albums, D-2 and D-DAY, where he performed:

  • Polar Night
  • Daechwita
  • Amygdala
  • People
  • People Pt. 2 with IU
  • Snooze with Kim Woosung from The Rose; the live performance included samples from his song so far away feat. Suran

Known as a ‘safe place’ to armys, Yoongi delivered that through the documentary. Most people are fearful of anxiety, but he thinks of the emotion as a friend; while many dread the uncertain futures, he reassures fans that the worst almost never happens and that’s the story he wanted to share. Stories that focus on the present.

An impactful documentary that shows the raw insights and struggles that Yoongi faces, it’s one for all to enjoy and hear what he has to say of his career.

SUGA: Road to D-DAY is available on both Disney+ and Weverse now.
