MOONBYUL
MOOMOOs were in for a treat last Saturday at Capitol Theatre as Moonbyul, member of powerhouse girl group MAMAMOO, came to Singapore along with her first world tour. Marking the seventh year of her solo career and ten years into the industry, Moonbyul’s long wait and efforts definitely paid off as she pulled an amazing 3-hour long performance for her first-ever concert.
Be it the stage set-up, Moonbyul’s vocals and performance, or the affectionate interactions with her fans (yes, even those at the very top of the venue), Moonbyul proved to everyone why her concert was worth every single pennies of theirs.
STAGE SET-UP
The single stage setup featured a large screen on the right, with steps on the left leading to the top of the screen. Moonbyul made full use of the stage as she made her grand entrance from the top, and graced fans with her vocals where she sat by the stairs.
Moonbyul also carefully themed the background of the screen to her music, such as “Refuge”, “Congratulations” and “Take Off”.
VOCALS & PERFORMANCE
Be it the opening act of “Intro: What Would You Do”, melancholic ballads such as “Refuge”, dance-themed “Touchin&Movin” and “I’ll throw it away” or fan favourites “Shutdown” and “Lunatic”, Moonbyul’s vocals remained steady throughout the show. Her performance ability was also proven through her clean and crisp dance moves synchronised along with the Born Black dance team.
She further proved her singing talent as she took to singing off the setlist multiple times during the talk segments with many fan-requested songs, such as “Mirror” and “After Sunrise”.
Like idol like fans, Moonbyul also led fans into singing through her encore performance, with fan-favourites such as her unreleased song “Take Off” and the classic “Cheese in the Trap”.
“(on Take Off) Not many people know this song, but I prepared this song specially for this world tour. I worry a lot about whether I’ll do well for this tour, and this is presented in the lyrics of this song where I want to ‘take off’ with my fans through this tour.”
MOONBYUL & MOOMOOS
Throughout the concert, it was effortless to say that Moonbyul and her fans shared a heartwarming relationship. Not only was she always responding to her fans and their requests, she also took to appreciating their efforts in making a fan-made lyrics book consisting of all her songs. The lyrics book also appeared in the show multiple times as she often referred to it to sing the ad-lib song requests.
“I wish for my fans to never be too down, and to always love yourself first. Only when you love yourself, then you can love others and share it with them. There are times we want to lean on others, and want others to lean on us too. To cheer my MOOMOOs on, I will continue to do my best to do songs that fans really like.”
It was also heartening to know that despite English not being her main language, Moonbyul frequent made efforts to speak in English whenever she has the chance (and cheekily quipping herself as a genius).
Moonbyul’s efforts were not dismissed as fans reciprocated her love by preparing a cake celebrating the success of her world tour as well as a fan banner during her encore song “Memories”.
