Describe any female Korean idol and you’ll get the same usual terms: shy, reserved, a whole lot of aegyo.
Now think of the complete opposite and you get Jeong Eunji, lead singer of Korean girl group Apink.
The vocal powerhouse was in town last Sunday for her first ever solo concert – 혜화 Hye Hwa. Eunji dominated the stage with her presence and her heavenly voice right from the start of the concert, serenading fans with popular light-hearted hits like Hopefully Sky and Spring. The down-to-earth singer gave fans a concert worth their buck by proving that she is indeed a woman full of talent not just in singing, but in entertainment too.
The idol singer and actress picked up English specially for her concert in Singapore and spoke to fans fluently for a good amount of time without a translator. She was so good at the language that she even teased fans in English during a special event segment. The highlight of which was of course, Eunji inviting a lucky fan up stage to perform a duet with her after reading out his request on stage. Talk about excellent fan service!
Eunji also broke conventions of the aegyo-centric industry by jokingly refusing to fulfill any requests for her to showcase some cute moves, but eventually conceded to do 5 sexy poses and managed to impress fans with her solo dance of Apink’s Mr Chu.
Eunji continued belting tune after tunes, including covers of foreign artistes that perfectly captured the beauty of her voice, including the Chinese hit 那些年 (‘Those Years’, OST of 2011 Taiwanese movie ‘You Are The Apple of My Eye’), which she sang with a near-perfect pronunciation.
Eunji made fans feel right at home in this small and cozy event, taking the effort to interact with fans any opportunity she gets and ending the successful event on a high note.
