Hyperplay, the first ever integrated ASEAN esports and music festival happened last weekend on 4 & 5 August; which saw both avid gaming and music fans gather together at the Singapore Indoor Stadium to get immersed in all the action.
After 2 days of intense League of Legends matches with representative teams from 10 ASEAN countries, Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur Hunters emerged as champions with a 2-0 victory as they defeated Vietnam’s Super Star Destroyers in the finals with an amazing showdown of a 63-kill massive bloodbath.
The Sam Willows kicked off the 1st MTV Spotlight with hit songs
On the first day, local band The Sam Willows kicked off the 1st MTV Spotlight with their hit songs All Time High, Baby Don’t Shy, Keep Me Jealous and Thirsty. The quartet were emotionally charged while performing Save Myself and Robot, but the atmosphere was quickly changed as they broke into dance for one of their latest single, Papa Money. Their set ended with For Love and Take Heart, both favourites off their debut album.
CL mesmerises Blackjacks with 2NE1 classics
Besides performing her solo tracks, Blackjacks (2NE1 fans) were also delighted as they broke into cheers when familiar 2NE1 classics like Come Back Home, Gotta Be You, Falling In Love and Can’t Nobody were performed by the group’s leader. The atmosphere was lit and on fire as CL performed Hello Bitches to an amazing pyrotechnic display, and the night ended with I Am The Best, where everyone was singing along to the classic “naega jeil jal naga” line in the chorus.
CL clearly showed the crowd why she was the Baddest Female as soon as she got up on stage, as her fans, affectionately known as GZBs immediately got on to their feet, to none other than The Baddest Female. As a gift to her fans after returning to Singapore after a couple of years, she performed Ain’t No Better Feeling for the first time. The crowd was all hyped up as she performed her solo songs, Dirty Vibe, Lifted, Dr Pepper, MTBD and ₩1,000,000.
Slot Machine and Afgan sets the mood for ASEAN League of Legends finals
Day 2 of Hyperplay saw more international acts on the MTV Spotlight stage, as Thai rock band Slot Machine and Indonesian idol Afgan set the mood for the ASEAN League of Legends finals. Slot Machine blew away the crowd as they opened their set with Interlude, MRT and Sky Burning Stars. This time round, the band brought a more experimental sound onto the Hyperplay stage with Rue Du (Grey Sky). Pharn (Yesterday), and Spin The World. Slot Machine sang their lungs out for the audience during their final song, Chan Chao (Goodbye). Afgan melted hearts as soon as he stepped onto stage, performing Love Again, Knock Me Out, Sudah, Heaven and crooned to ballad number Count On Me. Afgan’s set ended with a upbeat hit Panah Asmara.
Performing in Singapore for her very first time, Grammy-winner Alessia Cara brought on a seven-track set for her MTV Spotlight session. Alessia thrills with the crowd favourite, How Far I’ll Go, and fans filled the stadium with the familiar lyrics in a sing-along. Not forgetting to take a moment to remind the audience on the importance of body acceptance, she delivers her hit song, Scars To Your Beautiful, against a video backdrop featuring people from all walks of life. Alessia ended her set on a high, with crowd pleaser, Stay, and left the audience wanting more.
Nick Jonas charms fans with smooth voice and boyish charms
Singer-songwriter superstar Nick Jonas took over the stage to a roaring crowd. Armed with his boyish charms and smooth voice, he started off the session with chart-topper, Close. With the fans moving along to his soulful beats, Jonas took a moment to thank his fans and recalled his last visit to Singapore, four years ago. The entertainer then kicks into his next hit, Chains, and serenaded the ladies in the crowd. As the last song drew near, Jonas teased that he would have to come back for a longer performance in the future and closed the night with the sizzling track, Jealous.
