Disney+ is back with another 10-episode thriller kdrama – Blood Free, which is slated to premier on 10 April.
Tormented by the memory of a terrorist attack, former elite soldier Woo Chaewoon has dedicated his life to tracking down those responsible. Chaewoon’s suspicions are heightened after discovering CEO Yun Jayu’s company has experienced record profits in the years since the attack. Chaewoon infiltrates her organization while posing as her personal bodyguard. But with attacks coming from all around and the truth far more twisted than anyone could have imagined, will Chaewoon be able to get to the bottom of what happened that day before Jayu’s enemies exact their revenge?
Character Introduction:
A former captain in South Korea’s elite Naval Intelligence Command, Woo Chaewoon retired shortly after a terrorist attack on a South Korean base took several lives and permanently injured the President of Korea. Unable to forget that traumatic event, Chaewoon vows to find those responsible, and with only a few people aware of the President’s schedule that day, he has spent the past few years systematically eliminating suspects from his list.
With only a few suspects remaining, Chaewoon sets his sights on BF’s CEO, Yun Jayu, discovering that her company went on to enjoy huge profits as an indirect result of the attack. Infiltrating BF as Jayu’s personal bodyguard, Chaewoon will work to defend her from a swarm of incoming threats, all the while trying to uncover if the seemingly altruistic CEO could really be responsible for such a horrific attack.
A mysterious CEO and the target of widespread condemnation following her company’s disruptive effect on global agriculture, Yun Jayu is committed to realizing a future where no animals are hurt and no land is destroyed to feed the human race.
Once restrained by problematic legislation that restricted the sale of lab cultivated meat for human consumption, Jayu’s ambitions were unleashed following the repeal of the law in the months immediately after a terrorist attack. With her company, BF, now causing massive disruption across many of the world’s industries, Jayu has become the target of threats and attacks from farmers, hackers, drug cartels and more, but with BF now enjoying record profits as an indirect result of that fateful day, could there be more to this altruistic CEO than meets the eye?
Read on as we reveal our exclusive written interview of the director of the series, Director Park Cheolhwan on this thoughts on this latest Disney+ thriller series.
Question: What was it about this series that made you jump at the chance to direct it? |
Director Park: I love all of Lee Suyeon‘s (Stranger, Life, Stranger 2, Grid) scripts. we actually worked together as co-directors on the Disney+ title Grid, and I was so excited to get to work with her again when I received the scripts for episodes one and two of Blood Free. The series also has a fascinating premise, tightly-crafted sequences, and intriguing characters, I just couldn’t say no! |
Question: What was your biggest focus when directing this series? |
Director Park: As is the recent trend with many TV series, Blood Free spans several genres. Futuristic technology is a key feature throughout, so I wanted the series to have a sci-fi feel to it. I’m really pleased with the outcome, and I’d like to thank the show’s crew who helped me make this decision |
Question: Which character do you feel most attached to? |
Director Park: It may sound obvious, but I feel most attached to the main characters – Yun Jayu and Woo Chaewoon. Ten is not an insignificant number of episodes to tell a story in, and it simply wouldn’t have been possible for me to sustain my focus during filming if I didn’t feel a strong affection for the main characters. |
Question: What was your most memorable moment while shooting the series? |
Director Park: The majority of the production took place during the winter, so all my memories revolve around the cold weather. One of the most memorable experiences was when we shot an action scene over the course of a few days in the middle of a mountain range. On location, the production crew created the perfect setup for us to resist the cold, making it much easier for us to film that scene. I would like to thank the production team for all their help, especially during that part of the shoot. |
Question: Who would you recommend this series to? |
Director Park: I think viewers who enjoy binge-watching series will enjoy Blood Free the most. |
Question: If you had to describe Blood Free in one sentence, what would it be? |
Director Park: Nothing about this storyline is predictable and there’s a very good reason for it. |
Question: What would you say is a highlight of the series? |
Director Park: Definitely the evolution of the relationship between Woo Chaewoon and Yun Jayu throughout all ten episodes. It’s really fascinating to watch. |
