First, you must go back to basics. Who here caught the 2011 Captain America: The First Avenger? Those who have, will be familiar with a character, Agent Peggy Carter who works at the Strategic Scientific Reserve (S.S.R. in short), a precursor to S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division).

Agent Carter first started out as a one-shot direct-to-video short film in 2013 in the DVD and BluRay release of Iron Man 3. With the short receiving huge amounts of positive feedback from fans and critics, Marvel’s Agent Carter then expanded into a 8-part mini TV series.

In ABC’s Marvel’s Agent Carter, set in 1946 New York, a year after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. The show begins with Peggy Carter still mourning the apparent death of Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America. She is seen dressed in Red, White and Blue (Cap’s colors) and entering the New York Bell Co. that turns out to be a front for the S.S.R. (of course. A secret organization does not tell anyone where their base is! Except for television!)

Peggy Carter is shown to be shun by her male colleagues and faces sexism in a male-dominated world. She has to balance routine office work while secretly assisting Howard Stark (Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man‘s father) as a double agent. The latter, finds himself framed for supplying his deadly weapons to the top bidder, that being the evil organization, Leviathan. No, this time, it is not Hydra.

So going on missions, Peggy would need spy gear right? You have seen James Bond and all the spy tech he’s given. Take that and put it into the 1940s. Agent Carter had to work with early versions of the wristwatch she uses to crack safes, a lipstick called 102 Sweet Dreams that is an instant knockout (The name Sweet Dreams is such a giveaway though) and a flashgun that kind of look like the ones that the MIB uses to wipe memories except this one blinds your attacker momentarily. There’s also a magic typewriter that allows the bad guys to communicate with their boss. This reminds me of how subjects or in my opinion, slaves of Project Centipede get information in the eye (note: like google glass) to complete missions. And no, Peggy does not carry around ray-guns but just a small little handgun. For safety measures.

This being just the tip of the iceberg on this secret organization and how it grew to become S.H.I.E.L.D. or how Howard Stark, General Phillips and Peggy Carter became the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D.? We can only watch more to find out where we got the Black Widow, Tony Stark, Phil Coulson and of course, Captain America.

Marvel’s Agent Carter brings us into the world of 1940s espionage and tech. Kind of cool I would say.
