Hip Hop Never Dies: Show Me The Money 6

It’s good news for its ardent fans but for those who aren’t familiar with the show will have one question, “They’re still here?” The highly-raved hip hop competition show is now well into its sixth season and in this season alone, they saw over 12,000 contestants auditioning to be part of the show, including Changjo from Teen Top. Due to the overwhelming popularity, they even added a third audition location in New York.

Many wonder how long they’re able to sustain without exhausting the top dogs of the hip hop talent pool as well as coming up with new producer teams for new content. For a show that has been plagued a multitude of controversies such as obvious biases in judging and devil’s editing, it’s a surprise that they haven’t been axed yet.

Their cleverly designed show format makes it highly competitive and with the inclusion of highly acclaimed producers, it’s a buffet for those who are starving for some good original tracks they can bounce to. And in this season, there are four producer teams –– Team CoDean or FANXYCHILD (Zico from Block B and Dean), Team H1gherMusic (Jay Park and Dok2), Team Dynamic Duo (Dynamic Duo) and Team FealGhood (Tiger JK and Bizzy). This carefully selected producer team sees the return of producers who have appeared on past seasons as well as hip hop veterans appearing as new producers.

This season featured a comeback of past contestants myunDO, Nucksal, Hanhae, Junoflo, Killagramz, Oltii, Young B, Hashswan and P-type, making up a large majority of the top 16. It is arguable that it gets harder for new talents to enter the pool when past contestants are the main competition. Once again gaining a chance to try their hand at clinching the prestigious champion position earning them a high honour for surviving the arduous competition, a huge cash prize (yes, they literally show you the money), a brand new car and of course, bragging rights.

Just like its predecessors, Show Me The Money does not fail to impress with its music. The following are the best performing songs in its category. Songs that perform well usually consist of a good beat, rappers with a good sense of flow and rhythm and most importantly that x-factor in the performance that makes them stand out from the rest.

Personally, I feel that without some changes, it will be difficult to see a seventh season emerging that will be even more popular than the past seasons. The K-pop idol industry is experiencing the effects of oversaturation and as much as possible, the hip hop side should try to avoid going down the slippery slope to ensure that talents are properly groomed before debuting on television.

Nontheless, it has been an exciting season for everyone and I can’t wait to see who will emerge as the final winner!
