Training consists of an incredible range of movements and activities. As women around the world jump, spring, weight-lift, stair-climb, plank, push-up and burpee in the gym, they require training shoes that allow for dynamic, natural movement while also supporting their feet during their vigorous and varied workout routines.
Inspired by multidimensional training, the 2015 Nike Free TR 5 Flyknit shoe was designed by closely studying the body’s natural movements during training.
NIKE FLYKNIT SUPPORT FOR THE SIX CORE MOVES OF TRAINING
The Nike Free TR 5 Flyknit’s design is based on the six core moves of training – determined after Nike researchers studied the fundamental movements across types of training, from personal training and weightlifting to group fitness classes and boot camps. Each feature of the shoe helps enable natural movement, whether an athlete uses the Nike+ Training Club App, works out in the gym or takes high intensity training class.
“The Nike Free TR 5 Flyknit is a very holistic system,” says Nike Women’s Training Footwear Design Director Nicole Mueller. “The shoe’s design is based on how athletes move naturally, and Nike Flyknit allows for comfort and flexibility while being very light and strong with a sock-like fit.”
The upper design features Nike Flyknit technology to provide stable, breathable and lightweight support with a virtually seamless, sock-like fit. The Nike Flywire cables are knit into the Flyknit material for targeted support: in the forefoot for side-to-side movements and from the heel to the top eyelet for heel fit and support.
“We added cushioning and traction underfoot, and support in the upper only where needed,” continues Mueller. “The parts of the shoe work together to deliver multidirectional natural motion.”
Natural motion design drives every Nike Free shoe. The sole includes hexagonal flex grooves that support multidirectional movement. Each groove permits the shoe to flex and follow the movement of the foot; rubber pods on the outsole lend added traction and stability where needed for common training moves: the toe (i.e., mountain climbers), the side (side plank) and the heel (lunges).
GYM-TESTED BY THE BEST IN THE WORLD
Training for seven different track and field events as a heptathlete involves an understandably large number of exercises and routines. On any given training day, English track and field athlete Karatina Johnson-Thompson may sprint hills, repeat box jumps, power through circuit training and, of course, do a little running. The 2015 European Indoor Championships gold medalist also engages in regular strength and rehabilitation exercises to keep her feet and ankles strong and healthy.

“It feels great to train in the Nike Free TR 5 Flyknit, whether I’m doing a full-body workout or focusing on my core,” says Johnson-Thompson. “The shoe is lightweight, it molds to my foot when I lace it up, and it looks great. It helps me move naturally no matter what training drill I’m working on.”
LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD, TRAIN WELL
Athletes often tell Nike designers that when they feel like they look good, they perform better, so designers made certain the shoe is as beautiful as it is functional.
“The design has a lot of motion and movement; it’s dynamic and at the same time, the knit-in Nike Flywire lines are angular to show and give support,” says Mueller. “We want athletes to feel they look great wearing the shoe, while also providing the function and performance they demand.”
