Be the next Korean food cooking champion at the Hansik Contest!

Be the best K-food chef in town, by pitting your culinary skills at the Hansik Contest proudly brought to you by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Singapore (Korean Embassy).

Taking place on 14 October at the newly launched Our Tampines Hub, the Hansik Contest invites 12 teams to battle in a cook-off where 6 teams stand to walk away with attractive prizes – cash prizes for the top 3 winning teams and 3 consolation prizes comprising of dining vouchers to popular Korean restaurants in Singapore!

The Hansik Contest is one of the many exciting programs lined up under the main umbrella event, K-Square, a part of the Korean Festival 2017.

How to take part?

Participants would need to pair up with a team member of their choice and both team members must be 18 years old and above, as well as being a Singapore citizen. While there is no fee to participate in this contest, each team will also have to indicate the choice of dish that they would like to cook on the day of the contest. Registration is open till 30 September.

Participants can fill in the registration form at http://bit.ly/2xoawpS.

What do you need to prepare?

On the actual day of the contest, all teams will be tasked to prepare 2 dishes – one fixed dish and another of their choice within the given time frame of 90 minutes. This year’s selected dish is the all-time favourite Korean dish, Kimchi Stew, together with the Korean dish of their choice. Kimchi Stew, also known as Kimchi-jjigae is a stew-like Korean dish, made with kimchi and other ingredients, such as scallions, onions, diced tofu, pork, and seafood (Pork and seafood are generally not used in the same recipe). It is one of the most common jjigae (stew) in Korea and is a very popular dish in many Korean households. The stew is usually prepared with older, more fermented and “ripe” kimchi. This creates a stronger taste to the stew, and the use of kimchi is known to add nutritional and health benefits to the dish. For instance, due to its fermentation process, kimchi is rich in beneficial gut-boosting lactobacilli bacteria vitamins A and C.

Key ingredients such as Korean rice, Korean sauce, Kimchi, vegetables, meat and more will be prepared by the Korean Embassy with its strong support and contribution from K&J Butchery, CJ Group & KORYO MART. All participants should bring in their own raw ingredients and their own cookware (pots, pans, chopping board, knives, plates, spoons etc) for the contest. Only raw ingredients will be allowed to be brought into contest premises by the individual teams. Full list of the kitchen equipment provided at the culinary studio of Our Tampines Hub can be viewed here.

Prizes to be won

The Korean Embassy has selected the panel of judges to independently award the scores based on food quality, taste and dish presentation. There are 6 prizes to be won – Grand Prize: $1,000 cash, Second Prize: $500 cash and Third Prize: $300 cash and 3 consolation prizes comprising of dining vouchers.

Through the Hansik Contest and K-Square activities, the Korean Embassy looks forward to bringing Korean culture closer to the hearts of the residents of Singapore.
