[OP-ED] A Well Deserving Year for Entertainment in 2016

It’s that time of the year again, where major broadcasting companies hold award ceremonies to celebrate the successes of celebrities and their respective programmes. This year’s award season saw many expected and well-deserved prizes given out during the ceremonies. Let’s take a look at some of them:

Kim Jong-min took home the prized Daesang at the KBS Entertainment Awards this year. Many fans and viewers of the popular 2D1N, the programme that won Jong-min his Daesang, thought he was the most deserving candidate to have won the award. Truthfully, I couldn’t have agreed more.

9 long years of being on 2D1N, Kim Jong-min has always held a less-prominent role in the show. 2D1N was constantly dominated by more well-known cast members who were present on the show, like Lee Seung-gi and Cha Tae Hyun. Very little were there times where he stood to be the leader. This Daesang prize came after a special Kim Jong-min episode on 2D1N where he was made the main character of the events. There couldn’t have been a better ending to his appreciation event and he is truly deserving of the Daesang after slogging so hard for a show he was so loyal to, through thick and thin.

National MC Yoo Jae-suk took home the Daesang at the MBC Entertainment Awards for his role in the long-running variety show Infinite Challenge. Another well-deserved award given out, it was a very tough year for Yoo Jae-suk, especially dealing with difficult times on Running Man. He juggled many variety shows on many broadcast channels and he handled all of them with great energy and enthusiasm.

Despite not winning Daesang at the KBS Entertainment Awards for Happy Together 3, MBC gave the assurance and recognition for the National MC. With many things on his plate, Yoo Jae-suk has always been the centre of attention for his hosting activities. Yoo-Jae-suk even mentioned in his speech that he was loss for words following the announcement of his win, which proved how tough of a time he must be having trying to maintain and keep everything in check, for his was constantly looked up to.

Shin Dong Yup was also awarded the Daesang at the SBS Entertainment Awards for the second time in his career for his MC chops in My Ugly Ducking. Having been in the entertainment industry since 1996, Shin Dong Yup’s Daesang win drew and overwhelming amount of cheers and support live at the awards. Another well-deserved candidate, Shin Dong Yup has had his fair share of struggles through his career.

Being an MC for other programmes including Hello Counsellor and Immortal Song, he struggled to find his defining moment in his hosting career. With his other colleagues in the same field fairing better, it was not easy for Shin Dong Yup to get back into the scene after a scandal that broke out just 3 years into his career. Unfazed, Shin Dong Yup jumped back on his feet, going to the extends of taking this incident in his stride and joking about it from time to time when it was brought up. Having won a KBS Daesang 4 years ago, his second Daesang surely was the best gift to his unending determination to bring smile to the audience.

And there we have it! 3 incredibly talented and well0deserved recipients of the Daesang Prize awarded by the 3 biggest broadcasting companies in South Korea. What are your thoughts on the recipients? Share with us in the comment section below~
